Is Your iPhone Unlocked? How to Check Before Switching Carriers or Using a Travel eSIM

Official sources checked October 29, 2026. This guide concerns U.S. consumer carrier locks. Purchase date, financing, service type and the carrier that sold the phone can change the applicable policy. It does not establish eligibility for your individual device.

Before paying for a new plan or a travel eSIM, check the iPhone you actually intend to use. A paid receipt, an active line and an “unlocked” marketplace description answer different questions. A few checks now can prevent buying service that the phone cannot activate.

Quick answer: Open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. Then separately confirm the receiving provider accepts your exact model and supports its eSIM. An unlock is not a promise of coverage, plan eligibility or every network feature.

How to check Carrier Lock in iPhone Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General, then About.
  3. Find Carrier Lock. Some regional wording uses Network Provider Lock.
  4. Read the status. If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple identifies the phone as unlocked. If the message is missing or unclear, ask the locking carrier to confirm.

Only the carrier can authorize the carrier unlock; Apple cannot do it for you. This is not the screen passcode. Apple’s carrier-unlocking instructions (the UK version uses regional menu wording) · Apple’s U.S. travel guide with Carrier Lock wording.

Do not use a paid eSIM purchase as your first unlock test. Read the status and check eligibility before paying. If you are buying a used phone, ask the seller to demonstrate that status on the actual device and provide the exact model and return terms. A seller’s generic listing is not device-specific confirmation.

Unlocked, activated, compatible and paid off are different

Four checks before moving an iPhone to another service
CheckWhat to establish
Carrier lockWhether a carrier restriction still prevents use with another provider.
ActivationWhether the receiving provider has provisioned your line and SIM/eSIM. An installed profile is not proof of working service.
CompatibilityWhether the provider accepts the exact model and supports the desired SIM type, network features and destination.
Financial obligationsWhat you owe and which promotional conditions remain. An unlocked device does not erase an installment agreement or preserve future bill credits.

Apple’s eSIM setup guidance starts with iPhone XS, XS Max and XR or later, a supporting provider and suitable connectivity, but regional hardware exceptions apply. Verify the purchase region and exact model rather than assuming every phone with the same marketing name supports the same setup. Carrier Activation, Quick Transfer, QR codes and apps depend on provider support. Apple eSIM setup requirements and methods.

Paying off a phone may satisfy one requirement while service-age checks, account standing, lost/stolen flags or processing still remain. The policy examples below show why a zero balance should not be treated as a universal instant unlock. Before paying off or cancelling, review how payoff and switching can affect iPhone bill credits; this article does not replace those offer-specific terms.

Current carrier unlock policies: identify your purchase first

Start with the seller, original locking carrier, purchase/activation dates, prepaid or postpaid service, financing agreement and current account status. Do not apply another carrier’s rule merely because it uses the same underlying network. Business, replacement and older devices may need separate confirmation.

AT&T: Wireless and Prepaid have different requirements

AT&T Wireless requires purchase more than 60 days ago, full payment/zero installment balance, the device is not currently active on another AT&T account, no lost/stolen/fraud report and a current bill for existing customers. Eligible Apple devices should unlock automatically; if still locked, use the official request process. Noncustomers can request an eligible AT&T device’s unlock.

Prepaid: the current page requires 12 months of paid AT&T service, no other active AT&T account and no lost/stolen/fraud report. Prepaid iPhone users submit an unlock request. Do not substitute Wireless’s 60-day purchase requirement for this service requirement.

AT&T says request approval usually takes minutes but can take up to 48 hours; confirm any emailed request link within 24 hours. Deployed active-duty personnel have a payoff exception. Business requirements differ. AT&T eligibility and FAQ · AT&T expanded request instructions · Official unlock request.

Verizon: current postpaid policy is not the prepaid policy

For devices purchased directly from Verizon, its current postpaid policy provides automatic unlocking at full-retail purchase or full financing payoff. Lost/stolen reports must be cleared. Immediate payoff unlocking requires a secure payment method; using a Verizon Gift Card to buy the phone or settle the balance delays unlocking by 35 days.

Verizon’s prepaid policy instead requires 365 days of paid, active service, followed by automatic unlocking unless stolen or fraudulently purchased. Business terms include additional routes. The deployed-military provision links overseas relocation orders and suspension to good-standing verification after 60 active days; ask how this applies to your deployment.

The page is marked updated February 18, 2026. It does not establish every older purchase or reseller case. Ask Verizon which policy applies and request help if eligible automatic unlocking has not appeared; do not rely on an old universal “60 days” summary. Verizon’s current unlock policy.

T-Mobile: service age still matters after payoff

T-Mobile requires a device sold by it, no lost/stolen/blocked status and good account standing. Postpaid eligibility includes at least 40 days active on the requesting line and full payment of financing/lease obligations. A cancelled account must have a zero balance.

Prepaid requires 365 days since activation, or—if earlier—more than $100 in refills per active account line and more than 14 days since purchase. No more than two unlocks per line may have been completed in the preceding 12 months. Proof or other information may be requested.

Once eligible, supported devices unlock remotely within two business days; otherwise T-Mobile sends next-step instructions within that period. Deployed personnel in good standing may qualify with overseas orders. Contact T-Mobile support if the status has not updated. T-Mobile unlock policy · T-Mobile unlock support.

Other providers: Visible and Mint show why the details matter

Visible: its terms distinguish purchases before January 20, 2026 (automatic unlock after 60 paid, active days with conditions) from purchases made on or after January 20, 2026 (request after 365 paid, active days with conditions). For Affirm-financed purchases from June 1, 2026, the terms allow the 365-day threshold or full loan payoff, whichever comes first.

Visible clarification needed: the help page restricts the early-payoff option to monthly mobile plans, while its multi-month/annual note retains the 365-day requirement. The broader legal wording does not state that distinction. Confirm your billing arrangement and purchase date with Visible before relying on early payoff. Lost/stolen, fraud and permitted-use conditions remain; stopped payments pause the service-day count. Request assistance through Visible Care.

Visible legal terms: Device Unlocking Policy · Visible detailed help policy.

Mint Mobile: the short help page describes automatic unlocking after 60 activation days, but the full policy distinguishes paid-in-full devices from financed devices. Financing can extend the lock until the plan ends or is paid off, never less than 60 days after activation. Automatic unlocking is conditional on technical feasibility; otherwise follow instructions/contact Care. Loss, theft, fraud and proof-of-purchase checks apply. Deployed military personnel have an exception. Use the fuller policy rather than assuming the short summary guarantees every financed phone unlocks on day 60. For any other provider, locate its own official policy and identify who actually locked the handset. Bringing a locked phone to a new network does not transfer the original carrier’s unlocking authority. Do not send an account PIN or IMEI to an unverified unlocking website.

How to request help without guessing

  1. Collect the device’s purchase record, model, IMEI and relevant account/financing dates privately.
  2. Use the carrier’s official support site, app or verified support channel. Ask which policy and eligibility date apply to that specific device.
  3. Ask whether unlocking is automatic or requires a request, what is still outstanding and how to check completion. Keep the case reference.
  4. After confirmation, recheck Carrier Lock and follow the carrier’s instructions for the receiving provider’s activation.

Apple notes that a carrier request can take a few days. A new profile, restart or factory reset is not a substitute for carrier authorization. Do not erase the phone as a speculative first step; Apple’s completion instructions include specific scenarios after carrier confirmation. Apple’s completion and troubleshooting guidance.

Keep other locks separate. Carrier unlocking does not remove a screen passcode or resolve an Apple Account/Activation Lock problem on a used phone. A payment dispute or missing ownership information needs its own resolution. Apple’s Activation Lock explanation.

A practical checklist before switching or buying a travel eSIM

  • Read the actual lock status. Do not rely only on what a seller or old carrier bill says.
  • Confirm the receiving provider’s exact-device acceptance. Check eSIM support, purchase-region exceptions and the features you need.
  • Review the old agreement first. Request a payoff quote and confirm credit consequences before cancelling or paying early.
  • Allow time for resolution. Avoid booking an unlock-dependent service on the assumption a request will complete immediately.
  • Check package timing separately. Buying, installing and starting validity can be different events. Read when to install and activate a travel eSIM before departure.
  • Review roaming and home-line settings. A travel data package does not guarantee free calls, texts or home-carrier roaming. Consult your carrier’s charges.
  • Plan the number transfer with the receiving provider. Avoid cancelling the existing line before understanding the transfer steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does “No SIM restrictions” mean every travel eSIM will work?

No. It addresses the carrier lock. The provider still needs to support your exact phone, destination and activation method; the package has its own terms.

I paid off my phone today. Why is it still locked?

Check which carrier policy applies. Payment may be only one requirement; service age, account status, a request or processing can still matter. Obtain carrier confirmation rather than repeatedly buying or installing plans.

Can Apple or a travel eSIM provider unlock the carrier restriction?

Apple says the carrier must authorize its unlock. Buying another provider’s package is not that authorization. Contact the locking carrier through an official channel.

Does unlocking cancel my plan or move my phone number?

Treat unlocking, cancellation and number transfer as separate tasks. Confirm the order with the receiving carrier and review your existing agreement before changing service.

Is a used or refurbished iPhone automatically unlocked?

Do not assume it. Check the particular device’s status, ownership history and seller’s return terms. “Refurbished” describes condition or processing, not a universal carrier-unlock guarantee.

Is there one waiting period for all U.S. carriers?

No. The policies above differ by provider, prepaid/postpaid service, financing and sometimes purchase date. A general 60-day rule is not a substitute for the applicable policy.

What still needs individual confirmation?

Visible’s financing/billing distinction remains unresolved across its official pages. Mint’s short summary should not replace its financing-specific policy. For older purchases, replacements, business accounts, regional variants and rejected requests, obtain device-specific confirmation. This guide cannot inspect your account or guarantee an unlock date, network acceptance or uninterrupted service.
