| Pay outright | Apple connect-later 256GB examples rechecked October 29: iPhone 17e $699; iPhone 17 $929 before tax. Stock and delivery vary. |
| Finance with a carrier | The installment balance is owed separately from conditional credits. Confirm required service, APR, credit term and early-exit consequences. Unresolved promotional examples remain research only. |
| Trade in | Compare an ordinary trade-in estimate with promotional credits. Inspection, timing and eligible service can change the result. |
| Buy refurbished | Identify the seller, battery standard, warranty provider, lock status and return rules. Marketplace grades are not Apple certification. |
Targeted source review: October 29, 2026. The two Apple connect-later prices and listed refurbished examples remain supported; this does not refresh every carrier promotion or guarantee inventory. Choose your buying path
Compare the same model, storage and condition, then choose your payment path. Price rechecked confirms the listed device example, not personal eligibility. Research only means important offer terms are unresolved and the example is excluded from active recommendations. No affiliate relationship is claimed.
Pay outright
Compare the full device price, exact configuration, seller, and activation requirements.
Finance or trade in
Installments are amounts you owe; bill credits are conditional reductions to later bills. Compare service for the full credit period, the phone you give up, upfront charges and what remains payable if you leave early.
Official sources rechecked October 28, 2026. Current device-price examples and research-only promotions are labeled separately. An announcement is not proof of current eligibility. Expanded historical research keeps its earlier date where terms remain unresolved. Prices exclude applicable sales tax and wireless service unless stated.
Unlocked & outright purchases
Compare exact configurations. A starting headline price may assume connecting with a carrier. Paying outright and buying an unlocked phone are separate questions.

Checked October 28, 2026. Confirm price, stock, eligibility and order terms before buying.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Apple still lists 256GB connect-later at $699 and 512GB at $899 before tax. No trade-in required for these device prices. Confirm stock and delivery for the selected color.

Apple iPhone 17 · 256GB
$929 outright
New · “Connect on your own later” configuration
Payment / service: $929 for 256GB before applicable tax; no trade-in required. The $899 starting headline is not this connect-later configuration.
Availability: Apple lists 256GB and 512GB options. Stock, color and delivery are order-dependent; wireless service costs extra.
Payment, conditions & source details
The checked connect-later price is $929 for 256GB and $1,129 for 512GB, before applicable tax. Do not substitute Apple’s lower $899 starting headline for this purchase path. No trade-in is needed for these listed device prices.
Checked October 28, 2026. Confirm price, stock, eligibility and order terms before buying.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Apple still lists connect-later prices of $929 for 256GB and $1,129 for 512GB before tax. Carrier-connected discounts are a different purchase path; do not apply them to this cash comparison.
Apple financing is a separate payment choice
Eligible iPhones can use 24-month Apple Card Monthly Installments at 0% APR, subject to credit approval/limit and choosing ACMI at checkout. AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon must be selected; prepaid is excluded. Phones bought with ACMI are unlocked. Taxes/shipping use the card’s variable APR; a normal one-time card purchase is not ACMI. Refurbished devices are excluded. See Apple’s eligible products and installment periods.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Apple lists 24 monthly installments for eligible iPhones. Confirm approval, available credit and the selected payment option; a normal card purchase does not receive ACMI terms.
Carrier upgrades & activation offers
Carrier credits reduce future bills only while the offer conditions are met. Service, taxes and fees are additional. The AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon promotional examples below are retained as research only while key terms remain unresolved; they are not verified personalized recommendations.
RESEARCH ONLY · CONFLICTING TRADE-IN TERMS
AT&T iPhone 18 Pro · 256GB
$1,199.99 retail
Retail price verified · $0/month promotional qualification unresolved · not an active recommendation
Payment / service: $1,199.99 retail; advertised $33.34/month before credits over 36 months at 0% APR for qualified buyers. Tax on full price due at sale. The announcement’s $100/month Premium 2.0 requirement is before discounts and taxes/fees; exact controlling offer remains unresolved.
Not an active recommendation: $230 product-tile trade threshold conflicts with the announcement’s $180 threshold for certain phones. The announcement lists $35 activation/upgrade. Obtain the actual written quote and early-payoff rules before relying on credits.
Retained research & unresolved offer terms
The product page advertises up to $1,200 over 36 monthly credits. The announcement lists iPhone 14 or newer except 16e in any condition, or another eligible smartphone valued at least $180; the product tile instead states $230. These sources are not reconciled. Announcement terms say credits may take three bills; service cancellation ends credits and makes the balance due. New-line credits can stop if other lines are cancelled within 90 days. Optional Next Up Anytime costs extra and is not covered by credits. Confirm the controlling trade-in/plan offer, deadline and early-payoff rules. No fixed end date was verified.
Earlier research: October 25, 2026. See the October 28 recheck below for the current verification status. This is not an active buying recommendation.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: The $1,199.99 retail price and 36-month 0% APR listing are rechecked. The product tile still says $230 trade value while the announcement says $180 for certain phones. Eligibility remains unresolved; maximum credits are not a verified recommendation.
RESEARCH ONLY · FINANCE / TRADE-IN TERMS PENDING
T-Mobile iPhone 18 Pro Max trade-in offer
Advertised maximum: $1,000 credit
iPhone 18 Pro Max · 256GB example · up to 36 monthly credits · not a cash price
Payment / service: Published example: $1,299.99 device; eligible service starts at $100/month with AutoPay, plus taxes/fees. Qualifying credit and trade-in are required.
Unresolved: Confirm the exact eligible trade-in and finance agreement. A malformed lower-tier model name appears in the source. Do not use that tier or merge this with the separate new-line/port-in offer.
Retained research & unresolved offer terms
Qualifying plans: Experience Beyond 2.0 for new/existing members; Beyond or Go5G Next for existing members. Published examples include $1,000 for iPhone 16 and $730 for iPhone 14; verify the complete device/condition rules. Tax on pre-credit price and $35 connection charge apply. Credits may take two bills; line must stay active/in good standing, maximum four discounted devices/account and combination restrictions apply. Early payoff ends credits; cancelling the entire account stops credits and makes the balance due. Limited-time; no fixed end date verified. APR and exact financing remain unconfirmed.
Earlier research: October 25, 2026. See the October 28 recheck below for the current verification status. This is not an active buying recommendation.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: T-Mobile still advertises up to $1,000 through up to 36 credits, but its lower-tier trade-in name is malformed and the exact APR/agreement is not established. Keep this separate from its new-line/port-in offer; no fixed expiration was found.
RESEARCH ONLY · ANNOUNCEMENT NOT A QUOTE
Verizon iPhone 18 Pro · 256GB
Announced: $1,200 in bill credits
iPhone 18 Pro · 256GB · no trade-in announced · current checkout not verified
Payment / service: Announcement specifies a new or upgraded line, Simplicity with Simplicity Pro and 36-month device financing at 0% APR. Complete required service cost remains unverified.
Unresolved: Verify current availability, total service price, taxes, fees and eligibility. No complete cost or guaranteed free-phone recommendation is shown.
Retained research & unresolved offer terms
The announcement supports $1,200 across 36 monthly credits and zero activation/upgrade fees when enrolled in Verizon Loyalty; the waiver is conditional, not universal. Annual upgrade requires returning the phone in good working condition after 33% of the device agreement is paid. It does not establish that you keep the phone and all remaining credits. No fixed offer expiration was verified. Verizon’s general promo rules end credits for cancellation, early payoff/upgrade or an ineligible plan change. Cancellation generally makes the device balance payable; Missouri customers may continue installments. Confirm checkout-specific terms before recommending.
Earlier research: October 25, 2026. See the October 28 recheck below for the current verification status. This is not an active buying recommendation.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Verizon’s announcement still describes $1,200 over 36 credits with Simplicity Pro and 0% APR. Its current product page did not expose a complete quote. Required service cost, current eligibility and tax/fees remain unverified. Current Verizon product page.

Best Buy iPhone 17 · 256GB · Verizon
$929.99 device price with activation
Sold by Best Buy · Black · model MG464LL/A · 256GB · Verizon
Payment / service: Advertised $25.83/month for 36 months, 0% APR; $0 down for qualified customers. Full-retail tax is due at sale. Verizon service costs extra.
Before buying: Confirm activation/upgrade charge, service plan, stock and agreement. The $25.83 figure is rounded; use the $929.99 financed price and actual final payment, not multiplication as an exact total.
Payment, conditions & source details
The listing supports $929.99 with activation or 36-month device payments; it is not an unlocked, activation-free offer. The advertised up-to-$930 trade-in benefit is excluded because complete qualifying terms were not established. Verizon’s device-payment agreement determines actual installments. Its promo rules say cancellation generally makes the balance due (Missouri installment exception); early payoff or an ineligible change can end promo credits. No fixed retailer-offer deadline was verified. No complete service-inclusive total is claimed.
Checked October 28, 2026. Confirm price, stock, eligibility and order terms before buying.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Best Buy still lists model MG464LL/A at $929.99 with activation or $25.83/month for 36 months at 0% APR, subject to qualification. Service and account-specific charges are additional; the up-to-$930 trade-in headline is not verified here.
05 / VALUE FOR YOUR CURRENT PHONE
Trade-in credit is not always an instant discount
Apple’s ordinary trade-in value depends on model and condition. Credit can go toward a purchase or an Apple Gift Card. Inspection can change the estimate. Carrier promotional credits instead depend on the specific offer and often arrive over the financing term; do not add the two values together unless the offer explicitly permits it.
Timing, inspection and upgrade terminology
Trade-in: you surrender an eligible device for value. Bill credit: an amount deducted from future bills while conditions remain satisfied. Port-in: moving your number to another provider. Upgrade: replacing a phone on an existing line; it does not automatically qualify for a new-line offer.
Apple’s FAQ still uses both “sent” and “received” for the 14-day trade-in window after your new device arrives. Its estimate conditions require receipt in time and matching condition. Follow the order-specific instructions; do not assume mailing on day 14 protects the estimate. Keep tracking and confirm device eligibility, any balance and Activation Lock removal.
Rechecked October 28, 2026. The order-specific trade-in instructions control your deadline; the wording conflict is not silently resolved here.
Refurbished iPhones: compare the seller and standard
Apple Certified Refurbished is a specific program. A retailer’s “excellent” grade or a marketplace listing does not establish the same refurbishment, battery or warranty standard.
PRICES & PROGRAM RECHECKED · STOCK VARIES
Apple Certified Refurbished examples
$659–$749 outright examples
Unlocked listings · stock and color vary
Verified examples: iPhone 15 Plus 128GB $659; iPhone 15 Pro 128GB $679; iPhone 16 Plus 128GB $749. Prices are before applicable tax; color and inventory vary.
Condition / protection: Apple Certified Refurbished includes a new battery/outer shell and one-year limited warranty. Apple’s U.S. standard return window is 14 calendar days from receipt, subject to its policy.
Payment, conditions & source details
These three unlocked listings were present on October 28, 2026; inventory is not reserved. Apple describes functional testing, cleaning and genuine replacement parts where needed. Program standards apply only to Apple Certified Refurbished. See Apple’s return conditions; returning a device does not automatically cancel carrier service.
Checked October 28, 2026. Confirm price, stock, eligibility and order terms before buying.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Apple still lists the three 128GB examples at $659, $679 and $749. Its refurbished iPhone program includes a new battery/outer shell and one-year limited warranty. These examples do not guarantee current stock or a particular delivery date.

Unlocked iPhone 17 · 256GB · “Refurbished Excellent”
Seller observed: Networkstore, sold and shipped through Best Buy’s marketplace. This is not a Best Buy-sold device or Apple Certified Refurbished.
Not an active recommendation: Seller-specific price, warranty coverage/provider and return exceptions remain unresolved. “Refurbished Excellent” is a seller grade, not Apple certification. Do not rely on either displayed price or an implied financing rate.
Marketplace research, seller & unresolved terms
The checked listing identifies an unlocked Black iPhone 17 256GB, SKU 12246162, graded Refurbished Excellent. Its condition selector shows $814.97 while another price area differs, so the earlier $814.97 example is research, not a verified current offer. The listing states minimal wear, at least 80% battery and a 90-day warranty, but the warranty provider/coverage was not established; comparable/generic accessories are allowed. A suggested monthly payment is not proof of 0% APR. Best Buy’s policy generally extends standard returns to Marketplace unless otherwise noted; membership extensions do not apply. Confirm the seller’s exact return window, fees and warranty before featuring.
Earlier research: October 25, 2026. See the October 28 recheck below for the current verification status. This is not an active buying recommendation.
Rechecked October 28, 2026: Networkstore remains the listed seller. The page still shows inconsistent prices, including $799,97 and $814.97. Exact payable price and warranty provider/coverage remain unresolved. No suggested payment is treated as confirmed 0% APR financing.
07 / BEFORE YOU BUY
Compare the full commitment
1. Match the phone. Model, storage, condition and seller must match before prices are comparable.
2. Separate today’s cost from later bills. Record the down payment, sales tax, activation charge, device installment, service plan and each credit separately.
3. Check what happens if you leave. A 24- or 36-month installment term is a repayment obligation, not a promise of free service. Credits can require eligible service for the whole term. Ask what happens to the unpaid balance and remaining credits after cancellation, early payoff, a plan change or upgrade.
4. Confirm compatibility and return rights. Check carrier lock status, your exact device’s eligibility, return window, restocking fee and warranty. Do not assume paying full retail automatically unlocks a carrier-sold phone.
Does $0/month mean the iPhone and service are free?
No. In these examples, $0 is a conditional net device installment after credits. Eligible service, taxes, fees, a qualifying trade-in or other requirements may still apply. Missing a condition can leave device payments without the expected credits.
What is the difference between unlocked and paid in full?
Unlocked describes carrier restrictions; paid in full describes how you paid for the device. Apple’s buying FAQ distinguishes outright or Apple financing options from carrier installment programs. Confirm the unlock policy for the exact purchase path.
How should I compare a carrier deal with buying outright?
For the same period, compare device payments plus service charges, taxes and fees, minus only credits you qualify for and expect to keep. Include the value of the phone you give up. A lower device payment can still come with a higher total service cost.
Total-cost, returns and warranty checklist
Calculate the full term: device price + service for every required month + tax/activation/other fees + finance charges − credits actually earned. Include the value of the traded phone. A $100 monthly service rate alone totals $3,600 over 36 months if unchanged; this arithmetic is not a complete quote. Do not count a credit twice or assume a discounted service rate will last.
Apple purchases: Apple’s standard U.S. policy allows returns within 14 calendar days of receipt with included items, subject to its conditions. Carrier service may need separate cancellation. See Apple returns. Apple’s one-year limited hardware warranty covers qualifying defects under its terms; it is not accidental-damage insurance.
Best Buy-sold Verizon device: current policy provides a 30-day return period for Verizon activatable devices. A $45 restocking charge can apply to activatable devices, with unopened-product, listed-state and legal exceptions. A phone return does not automatically settle carrier charges. See Best Buy returns and exceptions. Do not transfer this Verizon-device window or Apple’s warranty to the marketplace example without confirmation.
Before accepting any carrier offer: obtain the written installment term/APR, required plan and AutoPay method, sales tax, activation charge, trade-in deadline, return/restocking rules and cancellation/early-payoff consequences. No fixed expiration was established for the retained carrier examples. Confirm again on the purchase date. Reviewed October 28, 2026.
08 / SOURCES & REVIEW
What still needs confirmation
Official sources rechecked October 28, 2026. All eight existing comparison cards and their useful research are retained. Current price examples are separated from conditional or historical research. No source proves a personalized order total, and no affiliate relationship is claimed.
Research only: AT&T’s conflicting trade-in threshold and controlling offer; T-Mobile’s malformed trade-in tier and exact financing; Verizon’s complete current checkout; and the marketplace price/warranty.
Confirm before buying: retailer/carrier activation charges, eligible service and AutoPay terms, complete trade-in rules, stock/delivery and location-specific tax. Apple’s trade-in deadline wording still differs within its FAQ. Do not assume an announcement remains purchasable or that a missing end date means an indefinite offer.
Prices are U.S. dollar device figures unless labeled otherwise. Add service, taxes, fees and finance charges, then subtract only credits you actually earn. Maximum savings and a $0 device headline are not complete purchase totals. Return to buying paths · Review the full-cost checklist.
